$20,000 was raised for The Terry Fox Foundation

We would like to thank all our friends and clients who attended the Terry Fox Tour of Hope at the peak of beautiful Grouse Mountain, on September 8, 2008. Through your generosity, ScotiaMcLeod was able to present the Terry Fox Foundation with a cheque for $20,000.00 for Cancer research!

We were delighted that over 500 guests were able to attend. It was touching to see so many children, together with their parents and grandparents, spending time together as a family for this cause. Clients, Irving and Rhoda Dardick truly had their hands full with their young granddaughters swatting the mosquitoes! Our own children, Brook and Madison, shared a noisy table with our visiting relatives from the UK, their grandparents and our clients Brian and Joan Jalmarson. One of Terry’s legacies was truly the ability to bring people together as a community with a common vision.

Over 500 Guests Viewed Terry Fox’s “Marathon of Hope” Van

Terry’s run was in fact 28 years ago and this was truly evidenced by his original van displayed for all to view. The 1980 Ford Econoline climbed to the peak of Grouse Mountain needing only a quick carwash to spruce it up before its big debut! It had left Newfoundland in May of this year to complete its cross-country tour 28 years later. I reminded many of the young viewers that vans in the “olden days” did not have automatic doors and DVD systems! Terry’s van seemed a trusty steed indeed but it offered few comforts other than shelter and a warm bunk for him to rest on so many years ago.

After viewing the van, many of our guests enjoyed the world-class entertainment Grouse Mountain presents. The perennial Lumberjack Show has some new material since I last saw it… the dynamite thrown down the well created quite a splash! I loved this comical look into B.C.’s past. There just wasn’t enough time to take in all the attractions that Grouse Mountain offers but we will be returning soon perhaps for some zip trekking fun!

Madison Mailey (age 11) with Darryl Fox (Terry’s Brother)

Our guests were all too soon queued up at the barbeques and waiting to hear Darrell Fox speak. He recalled being a 17 year old, watching his brother Terry wake at dawn, attach his artificial leg and run the grueling forty-two kilometers each day, in his attempt to cross our vast country. He reminded us that with the advances made in cancer research since 1980, it is probable that Terry would never have lost his leg and life to this disease. We must remember Darrell’s message and rejoice in the fact that “Cancer can be Beaten”.

The view from the mountaintop that night was amazing with the lights of so many homes twinkling far below. Hope too shone brightly as on this special day I had seen many of our own clients who were on chemo, or in remission, living life to the fullest. At the top of the mountain that day I also learned some personal news. My Father’s ultrasound, taken that very afternoon, showed he is beating his own battle with cancer.

At times like this we truly appreciate the generosity of our community, ScotiaMcLeod, Grouse Mountain and all those kind individuals who laboured to make this event so successful. Who would have thought an old van could rev up the Canadian spirit? Lastly, we must applaud The Terry Fox Foundation…Terry would have been so proud of his brother Darrell who has carried the baton these past 28 years, leading a foundation that has raised more than $450 million dollars worldwide.
